Essential Safety Kit
You don't need to spend a lot on kit when you start getting on the water, espeically if you're learning in warm weather. There are a few things you should add to your kit list though. These items are relevant for almost all watersports. I've included a couple of my videos too to explain in a little more detail.
Buoyancy Aid, Lifejacket or PFD
One of the most important personal safety items for anyone on the water is a suitable buoyancy device. I explain the different options an what to look for on this video.
You don't need to spend a lot, but make sure it's the right size, the right buoyancy, and has a decent size pocket to be able to carry the basic safety kit below.
Waterproof Phone Case
Being able to carry a phone gives you lots of options. Check the weather, track your progress, navigate with map & compass apps, and should the need arise, you can pinpoint your location and call the emergency services.
Safety Knife
Where there's rope, you should have a knife. We all like to think we'll never need one, but if you get in a tangle on the water, you could be in serious trouble pretty quickly.
Rescue Whistle
Cheap and small, a whistle is a great way of attracting attention for various reasons. If you need help, or to alert others to a danger, carrying a whistle is a no-brainer. Get the mountain rescue type, not the football type as the ball can stick if it gets wet.
